Instrumental

Performing

Karl has performed in many instrumental ensembles including the Gettysburg College Symphony Band (trumpet and percussion), Gamelan Gita Semara (percussion), the Bullets Marching Band (trumpet). He performs on the trumpet and cajon regularly at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Mechanicsburg. 

Conducting

Karl currently conducts the 5th & 6th Grade Concert Band at Manheim Central Middle School. The ensemble consists for learners typically studying their instruments for the second and third year. They perform Grade 1 and 1.5 repertoire. Karl conducts the Festival Brass Ensemble at St. Peter Lutheran Church is an ensemble made up of elmentary and secondary students, college students, and professional musicians. Karl previously conducted the Bullets Marching Band and the Sunderman Conservatory Wind Symphony. Karl served as drum major of the Bullets Marching Band where he conducted in both rehearsals and every pregame and halftime performance. While at Gettysburg, he studied instrumental conducting with Dr. Chris Hefner and Dr. Russell McCutcheon.

Teaching

Karl has taught in many diverse instrumental ensemble settings. At Manheim Central uses a variety of repertoire including film music, popular music, folk songs, and modern compositions to present new musical concepts to learners in the 5th & 6th Grade Concert Band. He also teaches jazz repertoire to the 5th & 6th Grade Jazz Band that focuses on introducing improvisation, jazz articulation, and foundational playing skills. Karl also adjudicates with the National Judges Association where he is currently certified on Individual Analysis Music for Marching Bands.

Previously, he taught visual and musical technique with the Greencastle-Antrim High School Marching Band as well as with the Bullets Marching Band. With these organizations Karl was responsible for large and small group instruction. At Greencastle-Antrim he worked with beginning brass players on sound production and at Gettysburg he coordinated marching basics instruction. Additional he taught visual technique to the Greencastle-Antrim Indoor Percussion Ensemble where he was responsible for coordinating instruction with the drill designer. At St. Peter Lutheran Church, Karl works with student musicians to prepare for performance as part of festival worship services as well as with volunteer ensembles to present special litugy settings.
